    Hi
I have come across some software that clams to be able to use a firewire Dv camcorder as a tape drive. I have tested it and it appears to work.
As anyone used anything like this ? and how good is it over a period of time

  2. Lets say it would do what it claims, the head and the camcorder is too precious to use it as a backup. I personally don't even like to rewind the tape to rub against the head.

Yes, pleas tell us the name of the software. This would be a good option for emergencies.

DV format video (unlike similar backup tape formats) uses continuous stream recording and is designed to cope with data dropouts on playback with dropout compensation and on the fly error correction. This is good enough for video but isn't robust enough for data recording. It is more about hiding the data errors from view rather than making full correction.

Data backup formats use packet verification similar to a network copy. When bad packets are detected, a request is made to resend and replace the bad packet. For this to work with a DV camcorder, there would need to be some way to play the tape for verification and a way to correct incorrect packets with resends. I'd want to check that the software is adequate to the task.

  6. The good backup/recovery scheme should include interleaving and error correction. the former spread the data into multiple blocks, so the re-assembled data only have single bit issue, and let the latter do the error correction.

DV tape do no have them. So, the software must provide them to be deem good idea as backup method.
