Comment to the comment: I did exactly what the hack said, and tried, and it did not work. =( So I got mad and sent the code 20 times to the DVD upon which it shut down and: WAS REGION FREE! So I guess it's not that sensitive, try and try again and eventually it will work (and when it does, it will shut down so you see it). Thanx for a great hack Zaphod! Worked fine for me, but I had the same "problem" as a couple of you other guys - worked after sending 20 - 30 times. A reminder if you havent tried this hack yet : If Remote Control reports "0 IR codes imported" (or less than 19) then you probably have a space after each line, probably just because you marked and copied directly from Zaphod´s code here. Then it will not work. Edit Category-TV and make sure that there are no spaces after each line. | |||

Works well on german DV 454. For OmniRemote: First install OR and a memo just with the four-bits for button 0. Then start OR on Palm, export category TV, in Memo you can view that all the buttons are like Button name-XXX 0000 0067 0000 0000 Now paste the long text from your other memo to some button. When you re-import a catagory in OR, it should say "19 IR codes imported." If you try to import another memo not created by OR, you will fail. | |||

I have achieved all the steps suggested. But when I importing the category I see the code is slightly changed 0048 instead of 0049 and a few othe changes. I export again the category, modify the memo and when done import again but code is always altered the same way as before. I have made the training of the buttons first. Then have exported the category. Then have simply changed the button name 0 with the code given in the first message below and have imported it again. Known Ir-code hack also possible with Pocket PC2002. I myselfe used a IPAQ3850. You also need "TV remote controller 3.1"( www.pdawin.com ) and the ProntoEdit software (can be found at http://www.smarthomeusa.com/pronto/pronto_edit_tsu2000.htm ). The clue is that you can import CCF-files(Pronto files) in de "TV remote controller 3.1" software. So I made a CCF-file, using the known hex-infrared code, with the ProntoEdit program and then imported it in the "TV Remote" software. I also had to try it about 20 times before it worked. I have just used this hack for the pioneer dv-355, and it works. Tried several times to import the category, but always the OR changed the code to 0048, so I uploaded the memo to the palm, changed the code to 0050 before importing, and that was it, OR exported it as 0049. I had to press button "0" 23 times in the OR until the dvd player turned off. Hope it helps. | |||

Hi there, as I told before, it works on a german 454. For me, OR changes the codes also, and it took me a fucking lot of tries, but finally it was done. There won't be a "working" .pdb file, as the problem is in OR. I tried to send my code to an Ipaq and a universal remote, then I learned another button with the codes I have sended, and there are always many changes. OR seems not to be to reliable, so I guess the only clue I can give is to try it again and again, turn off all other advices like TV or VCR, and eventually it will work. @Haukis: Have you tried to set the output of your player to RGB? Otherwise the black and white is normal, seems you have an rather old TV. | |||

I finally got it to work too. I spent a whole evening on this problem, but a previous post clearly mentioned that you have to export the database with OR, then past the original hex codes (the hex code from the key "0") to another key, then import the database again in OR (it *must* display that you imported 19 IR codes) and it's perfectly working. I sent 3 times the key and the dvd player switched off by itself. When I rebooted, it displayed "REGION _*", perfect ! Thanks for the tip ! Steph | |||

Using Zaphods IR Code Sequence I have written a program which should trasmit this from a Psion Revo, or a Diamond Mako PDA. It may also work from a Psion 5MX. With regard to Matt's question: If the player won't accept an RCE disc it should show a map of the world regions on screen. 1 method of bypassing this problem is to play a regular R1 disc past the FBI warning page, eject, then try the RCE disc again. The player effectively "hard-sets" itself to R1 once a R1 disc is accepted, so any subsequent R1 discs (RCE or not) should then play. This works with pre-RCE mod chips, so MAY work with the hack. | |||

These two codes transports the same information and Zaphods codes are the source for mine. Zaphods code is "learned". That means recorded from another remote. With that learning, there where some errors and timing (on/off lenght) problems inserted. That make problems with some players to accept that code. I analyzed what is the information that should be transported, and coded it with a correct timing. Thats it. | |||

As peter suggested, I succeffully made my German DV454 region free by using LIRC for windows (2000 prefessional) on a Dell Lattitude Laptop CPx with a built in IRDA. I first tried using the Linux version (Mandrake V9.0 and Redhat V7.2) but could not get LIRC it to work. I had initial problems with winlirc version 0.6.4. I then read a report of transmitter bugs in that version. I then tried the previous version 0.6.3. This worked first time with the same peter's config file. It is important to first disable the IRDA drivers under Windows and to also delete the *irda* files from the windows inf directory. Otherwise Windows keeps installing the IRDA driver. In the Winirc config screen I set the reciever type to RX, Virtual pulse to 300, Transmitter to TX. That was all. It is nice to see region 2 gone from the setup screen! Deano, On your toshiba laptop you must ensure that the relevant com port has not been grabbed by windows 2000. On the BIOS screen it should tell you which comp port (com2 probably)is being used by the IRDA driver. I also set the speed of my IRDA from FIR (Fast) to SIR (Slow). Once you have disabled the drivers and removed the 6 *IRDA* filesfrom the winnt/int (hidden) directory, the com port should be free after the next reboot. You should check this by looking for a new com port mentioned under the ports device category. The exact method including editing some inf files, is defined in the WinLirc site. The only thing I found out by myself that was not mentioned was to delete the 6 files with IRDA in their title (using 'del *IRDA*'). Up until then Windows kept installing the IRDA device. Once you tell WinIRC using the reconfigure button what port and speed you are using all should be ok. My 454 powered down after pressing the send button. When it came back up it was multiregion. WinLirc worked for my DV-350 beautifully :-) Here are my instructions: Background info: My Thinkpad A30 (Windows 2000) had detected and installed the following device: *IBM0071.DeviceDesc="IBM ThinkPad Fast Infrared Port" This is how I got it to work with WinLirc: 1) remove following files from \Winnt\INF *irda* irnsc.inf (might be different dep. of your hardware) netirda.inf (I'm not sure if all these really need to be removed. I paste the memo that the first hack in this forum says in my palm desktop and then I try to import it but it just keeps saying "imported=0". Once I tried exporting the database first and then modifying it, but it was too big and it took 2 memo-files, I modified it and then imported it but it said imported=12, only... Why when I paste all the codes it doesnt read them but when I modify the exported it does, at least a part..? They both look the same, but with different codes... Hi, because i don't hava any pba i tried the lirc method. I have a Fujitsu 166 MMX notebook, but could not make the ir port work with winlirc. So like Aleks suggestion I went to a store with many branches here in Holland and a salesman offered me to modify my 350 with a pioneer remote control just for a six-pack of beer!!! To Gneisenpete (and all other) I can confirm that peter's hack (13.Jan) works properly on both a pioneer 350 FW Version 1.208_adv and a second Pioneer 350 with FW 1.568_adv. I used the actual Omniremote Version 2.07 and a Palm 105. It took 20 tries on the 1.208 and only 2 ties on the 1.569 to get them regionfree (identification is now "*" instaed of "2"). regrads Frank | |||

Success! Worked perfectly using WinLIRC, Peter's LIRC config file in his Jan9 post and the simple IR transmitter shown here: http://www.lirc.org/transmitters.html If you intend to use WinLIRC just this once, the simple transmitter will do just fine. Just a few important things to note: 1. Connect the anode of the 1N4148 to RX and NOT to DTR. It didn't work until I did this modification. 2. Even though it's not indicated on the diagram, connect the cathode of the IR LED to GROUND. 3. Use as short a cable as possible and hold the IR transmitter in front of the DVD's IR sensor at point blank range. 4. Make sure you use a 950nm wavelength IR LED. If you can't find one (like me), rip one from an old remote or buy a cheap $10 one and rip the LED from that instead. I didn't want to have to install Linux just for this so I used WinLIRC. Makes sure you use version 0.6.3 because 0.6.4 is buggy and it didn't work for me. http://winlirc.sourceforge.net/ You only need to extract the Winlirc.exe file and run it for Winlirc to work. But you also need a valid confic file for it to start the first time you run it. Luckily, config files for the Linux LIRC and Windows are the same format. Just copy-paste Peter's lircd.conf file from his Jan9 post above into a new text file in Notepad. Don't include the start and end delimiter lines in the post: ---- lircd.conf starts here ---- ---- lircd.conf ends here ---- Only what's in between those lines. Next thing is to remove all the spaces at the end of each line that resulted from the copy-paste. Save the file as pioneer.cf. For the next step, close all programs and run ONLY WinLIRC to make sure your PC has the maximum amount of resources available. WinLIRC can be a bit of a resource hog. Hook up your IR transmitter to a COM port and launch WinLIRC.exe . It will tell you it has failed to read IR codes or something. This is because it needs input in the form of either: 1. IR codes from an IR receiver circuit (which of course you don't have because you didn't build one... and that fortunately you don't need for this) or... 2. A valid config file. If the config file is not valid, it will go back to the same initial error messsage until you point it to a valid one.... which is the pioneer.cf file you created above. Next you will need to configure the options in WinLIRC to the proper values: Port: COMx (make sure you choose the right one if you're using a desktop. If you're using a laptop it's COM1 because those only have 1 COM port) Speed: 115200 Receiver type: RX device Virtual pulse: 300 Transmitter settings: TX (don't forget, the transmitter must be connected to the TX pin of your COM port. Again, it won't work if you use DTR, this is the MOST important part and ironically, it has NOT been mentioned anywhere here until now: I dug for it so you won't have to) Click OK and you're back on the main GUI on WinLIRC. In the drop-down boxes, select: remote: pioneer code: region repeats: 0 Make sure the player is plugged in bit turned OFF (you don't need to open the drawer BTW, I dunno where some people got that from anyway). Now point the LED of the transmitter at point blank range towards the DVD player's IR sensor and click the "Send Code" button. The player should turn off and it's now region free. If you did everything as above, it should work first shot. Unlocked both my DV-656A and my DV-353 this way. In order to test it, just try and play a disc of a region other than the player's original region. If you don't have any such discs, it makes me wonder why you wanted to do this in the first place... Just kidding ;) As an alternative, you can author a quick DVD with DVDit (or any other authoring tool) and set the region accordingly before generating the DVD files and burn it to CD-RW to test the player. Also, people have been wondering about RCE discs. Those also work perfectly on the region hacked player. I tested this with 2 RCE region 1 discs: - The Patriot - Something about Mary I ripped both DVD's and opened the IFO's with IFOedit to make sure the discs were really RCE and they were indeed. Works: PalmOs 3.5.3 + OmniRemote 2.08 + Peter's Code (Januari 13 2003). For my DV-350. Works like a charm, It's realy simple. Just read the posts, you'll it's all in here. The way I made it work is this: 1: Upload OR 2.08 2: Make a 'Note' in Microsoft Outlook (NOT Express) and put in Peter's Code (Januari 13 2003). 3: Synchronise your PDA with Outlook. 4: Run OmniRemote on your PDA. 5: Go to menu options and select 'Advanced'. - Choose 'Database' - Choose 'Import Category' It should say something like: '19 entry's imported' or something like that. I don't remember the exact sentence, but it was defenitely 19 anything else means it hasn't accepted the code correctly. Hope this helps. Now for another questions I still have. Now I'm able to play Region 1 DVD's I get them in black and white. I know I know, change your display output on your DVD-player to 'Pal' (I'm Dutch). BUT, my DVD player doesn't have that option and does the switching automaticaly according to what the DVD is serving out. Have used the method from 9 jan, works perfectly. Used pin 3 of the rs232 connector, resistor 800 Ohm. Tried to send the code into a learning remote controller, this didn't work..i think because the transmitted signal is to weak. Hi, well, after so many people successfully did the region hack, I also did a try. I just downloaded OR V2.08, and tried to import the codes from memo pad as a category. But OR does neither say "19 codes imported" nor "1 code imported" but "18 codes imported". When I try to use my palm with button "0" it says, that the RC has not been trained. Just used Bernie's DV-454 hack with Peter's codes on a Region 4 DV-355. Used my Compaq laptop with a USB COM port adapter, and the simple (1K)resistor/LED transmitter held about 6 inches from the player. Started with the player ON, door CLOSED, and sent the codes. I followed QuickSiver (January 22) using IBM ThinkPad T21 + Win2000 + built-in IRDA + WinLirc + Peter code (January 09). All seems to work well and function correctly. I have the Pioneer DV-S755Ai (the Singapore version of DV-47Ai). With the player ON, I sent the code, and the player turn OFF. However, afterward, nothing seems to change. It is still not region free. Strangely enough, it kept switching between Region 1 and Region 3 depending on which DVD disc was in there last. But still, it does not play other region discs. Wow, 111 comments! Not bad. I was in a hurry when reposting the hack (October 30 2002), so I missed a couple of things from the original message. Most of it you've figured out yourself, but one thing I'd like to add: When using the Palm as a remote control, you have to be precise because of the narrow IR beam. If you are certain that the beam did hit the IR receiver, you don't have to keep trying. Just power off, wait a few seconds and then turn the power on. What happened for those of you that kept sending the signal was just an ordinary timeout. The player turns it self off if nothing happens. Peter (January 15 2003) is right about that my code is "learned". The signal sequence was copied directly to my Palm V from another remote (The one in the shop that usually charges $35 for this operation.), and I haven't tested import of the exported code. - Zaphod | |||

I used the Pioneer DV-454 Pronto CCF file posted by Samuel Ouma on 12/24/02 @ remotecentral.com with my PRONTO PRO unit to sucessfully hack my 47ai. I had to hit the "0" button included in this device file around 20 times from 6 inches away before the unit powered down on its own. Upon power up, the unit is able to play any disc I own (regions 0,1,2,3 and 4). The only issue I noticed is that the PAL video output is considerably brighter than NTSC on my CSF calibrated display, but I can compensate for this discrepency. | |||

I have tried first using an Compaq laptop (it had an irda built in port) and WinLIRC + Peter's codes ... But It didn't work this way ! Because the laptop has only one COM port free (COM 1) , which is used by USB on default, and not by Irda ... WinLIRC didn't send any data this way ! Hi! For all of you guys asking for how to do this on Windows XP, I can confirm that it works fine! I tried Peter's settings (with help of QuickSilvers detailed description), and used a Dell Latitude C800 Laptop (using a built in SMC IrDA device). A couple of notes. 1. Use WinLirc 0.6.5. 2. Take a look at Peter's first post and create the config file as specified (january 9th, 2003) 3. Follow Quicksilvers description (january 22th, 2003) 4. ONE IMPORTANT DIFFERENCE! Windows XP Hardware installation wizard do not find the "Generic Ir Serial Port" automatically. It shows up as Unknown device. You will have to select a device manually (do not search for it, as Windows XP won't find it). When wizard reports Unknown device, do the following: 1. Click Radio button "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" -> Next 2. Click Radio button "Don't search. I will choose driver to install" -> Next 3. In the list of available devices, select Ports -> Generic Ir Serial Device. Then installation should be ok. My IrDA device is configured on COM4 (configured in BIOS), and works fine. I modified a Pioneer 454 with great success. Only worked for me when the power was turned on. The player turned itself off again after sending the codes through WinLirc. Hi, I have an ageing Dell Lattitude CPi and managed to get it to work with Quicksilver's inf file hack. The only deviation I had was ; a) The driver needed to be manually selected (OS is Windows 2000 SP4), as it would not automatically select 'Generic Ir Serial Port' b) After reboot, it would not necessarily choose the correct COM port. The only one that seemed to work for me was setting it in BIOS to COM4 and then in Advanced settings on the COM port, setting it to COM4. COM3 didn't seem to work. The main thing is to use the Learn facility first to make sure the ir port is working correctly. Once you have verified this, then go ahead and try the send. Once i had sent the codes, it did not actually power down, it just hung on the 'Loading' message. This was because it was outputting in NTSC rather than PAL Thats why I had to power it up with >>>> pressed. The menu there forces it to always output in PAL to suit my TV Hope this helps | |||

Ater hours and hours managed to get Dv 454 from Greece to play Region 1 in colour. I used Treo 90, OR v2.14 and alot of info. from other posts. I exported OR TV category to PC and then substituted Peter's Button 0 info. I do not know if this helped or not but I 'tuned' the OR TV catergory to my DVD Remote or at least some buttons, I think!!!. I am a very new newbie so sorry if this is all rubbish. But it worked. PS give at least 10 sec before pressing 0 (zero) again as I was for hours just pressing,pressing pressing, not giving it any time to work. Using a Palm V and OmniRemote Pro v2.15 I tried everything listed on this site without any effect on my Pioneer 434. It did import all 19 codes, I trained the keys, I trained the power button, etc. All trained keys work but key 0 (with the replaced code) has no effect regarding region. Maybe my player (origionally Region 1, v1.134(4)/AV1:7.00) does not work as most have a player with the origional region 2. If I would know how people actually come up with all these different codes I'd try some myself. After about 6h I am at a loss and giving up :( | |||

Thanks for posting this info guys. Here's my story. I have a Pioneer DV360 - Region 2 Went to MAPLIN electronics store and bought the RS232 9 way plug, 1N4148 diode, 1.5Kohm resistor & a soldering iron ;o) I hacked open an old remote control and removed the IR LED. I then set about creating the IR device as described above (see here: www.agurk.dk/pso/backup/pioneer_region_free.rar - it's got the conf file, the description and the s/w required) I had to remove the resistor since the signal was very weak.... here's a tip: use a camera mobile phone to view the end of the IR LED when pressing "send code" (try it on your TV remote) and you'll see the LED flashing !! I offered up my laptop to the Pioneer DV360 front panel...clicked "send code" within LIRC and..... nothing ! I clicked "send code" a dozen times moving the IR LED along the front panel, still nothing. This time I turned on the player, clicked "send code" while moving the IR LED (by moving the whole laptop) along the front panel; this time success the screensaver logo switched off and the screen said "-OFF-"...I turned it off and on again. To check I opened up the Home Menu, Initial settings, Options and click display - it says Region 0 :o) Finding Nemo region 1 is playing as I type ;o) Thanks all. | |||

My DV-454 was Zone 2 and the hack worked straight away with just 1 attempt. Since I was totally new to this kind of stuff, I have a couple of tips for guys like me: 1. OmniRemote - you can easily download a trial version from http://www.pacificneotek.com/. Then just install iton your Palm. 2. Before you start your work, copy Zaphod's code posted on October 30, 2002 into your memopad on Palm. It'll save you time typing the memo into your PDA. 3. When you start OmniRemote, tap on OmniRemote tab and go to following command: 'Advanced'->'Databases'. Click on choose database and it'll show OmniRemote. Then click on export category. It'll export codes into Memopad under file name 'Category-TV'. 4. Go to MemoPad and open 'Category-TV' file. It contains the standard code that you just exported. Replace it with the Zaphod's code that you earlier saved into a file in MemoPad. 5. The key to a immediate success is to remove space behind every Button name line in the memo. Eg. Button name-Enter, Button name-0, etc. Once you have removed the unnecessary spaces, save the memo and start again OmniRemote. 6. Once in OmniRemote, tap again on OmniRemote tab and go to following command: 'Advanced'->'Databases'. Click on choose database and it'll show OmniRemote. This time click to import category. Once import finished, it'll give you a message "Import Complete. IR codes imported: 19". 19 is the number of buttons you are re-training. If it doesn't says 19, you missed some spaces in Zaphod's memo. 7. Just switch your DVD on, go close with your Palm, point it at DVD and tap 0 on OmniRemote. DVD immediately switches off. Your work is done! I tried DVD's Zone 2 (James Bond - Die Another Day) and Zone 1 (Joe Satriani - Live in San Francisco) and both play perfectly and in color. | |||

Using a One for All modem-upgradable remote, send the WAV file found at http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/dload.php?action=download&file_id=5558 to it. Once the remote has been programmed, set it to VCR/2000. Turn on the DVD player via the front pannel or its supplied remote. Using the One for All, press POWER. Turn your DVD player back on once again via the front pannel or its supplied remote. Insert a previously unplayable DVD. It should play as normal. This in my opinion is much more convenient than Prontos, PDAs, celphones, soldering homemade cables, etc. It worked on my Region 1 model DVD player/receiver. | |||

Adendum: Unfortunately, downloadable, burnable, multi-region compatible firmware does not exist for all Pioneer models. Also, when I installed downloadable, multi-region compatible firmware on an internal computer DVD drive, the drive had disc-reading problems ever since. As a result, I personally am not going to install such firmware on my set top DVD players. | |||
