Just bought Phillips DVDR880. Very happy so far. Prvious multi region hack failed to work so went searching and found this site: http://www.dvd.reviewer.co.uk/info/multiregion/full/philips750.asp The important info for me was this bit: 3. Using the number keys on your DVD player's remote control, enter the code 222 222 005 255. Note that this is 12 digits and the last digit will not show on the on-screen display. NOTE: For players such as the Philips DVDR-980, DVDR-985 and DVDR-1000 units, you may need to use the code 121 212 005 255 instead. For players such as the Philips DVDR-880 you may need to use the code 121 212 005 001 instead. Just to confirm that last code was the winner. I must say that my last post was a mistake. I used that code off dvdreviewer (121 212 005 001) and it indeed enabled me to play Region 1 disks, however in my eagerness to post I hadn't tried any other regions. I can now say that that code prevents me playing Region 2 disks. As an experiment I tried to use the (121 212 005 255) code to make me multi region or give me back my Region 2 but it did neither. I tried several times. I then experimented further. Typing code (121 212 005 002), seeing as 001 gave me region 1, therefore 002 gives me Region 2......maybe.... Well I'm happy to say that it worked ..... but only as a toggle. I can now switch between being Region 1 or 2, which should beat RCE (untested) but is not what I really want. Multi-region for me, so the experiments will contimue. | |||

Typing code 121 212 005 001, enables region 1 and 002 enables region 2. I cant get 255 to work to allow multi region. I also noticed that my 880 in factory set region 2 allowed playback of non region encoded disks. After chaging to region 1 then back to region 2 using this hack, I am unable to play non region encoded disks. I am interested why some machines seem accept the 255 code and others do not? Maybe this is a firmware issue? | |||

This hack will not work using the 159 play method. You must use RC6 code from palm pilot, AllforOne or any process that can send RC6. As last resorts try this ;http://home.hccnet.nl/r.de.haas/RC6/rc6_main_english.html its instructions on how to home bake a remote to send RC6. Once the RC6 is sent the display will show --------- WHEN ENTERING CODES THE LAST THREE NUMBERS WILL NOT SHOW. Type code 121 212 005 001 on the remote followed by play. Insert a region 1 disk, the player should now play Region 1 disk. Remove the region 1 disk and close door. Now send RC6 again and enter 121 212 005 002 on the remote followed by play. Insert a region 2 disk, the player will now play Region 2 disk. Remove the region 2 disk and close door. Now send RC6 again and enter 121 212 005 255 followed by play. The player is now region free. All disks should now play! Give it a try it worked for me. Remember you can not use 159 play to set to multi region, not sure why but you can’t. You must use the RC6 method! Before trying this hack I did upgrade the firmware to ff11h. You can get this from http://www.dvdplusrw.org/video/firmware_download.html its very easy to do all you need is a CDR and a burning program that understands .cue files such as NERO. I’m not sure that you need to insert a disk before each region change. I just did so to check that the region had change as required. | |||

for sending RC6 command(RC6 4 235) you can use also your laptop with IrDA port(infra-red port). I did it, yesterday and it works. - Wake up your DVDR and go to system menu. In "Remote control settings" change remote control to "DVD player" - No disc in DVDR - Go to http://www.veg.nildram.co.uk/remote.htm and download "remote13.zip" from there. - Unpack it and start manybutt.exe - In COM setting set your IrDA port (on my laptop it is COM2) - press "Reg Free" button. - Local display on DVDR should change to "------------" - Now, you can use your DVDR remote control for sending "121212005255"- free regions - press PLAY button on your DVDR remote control - Local display should show "NO DISC" - Your Philips DVDR is unlocked to regions free. I tried all the above and failed so here's what worked for me! OneForAll (URC7560) The RC6,4,235 code can be sent using a OneForAll universal remote. To do so: The remote should be set up to control the DVD (setup code 0539). Then press the DVD button Press the Magic button Press 085. After the 085 the familiar dashes on the front panel display should appear. And now enter the code; 121 212 005 255 followed by PLAY Like Richard i was unable to get this to work via my dvd recorders remote (via 159 play). I had the dvd remote set to player anyway but used my oneforall to insert the code above. so far so good. My Firmware is ff12h. My player was bought in March 2003. They made it better! | |||

I've tried all the other hacks and they're all pretty similar, but NONE of them have worked so far. Until now. This one DOES! I've done it myself after trying several weeks with various variations on a theme. 1)Via the "System" button on your Philips remote, on your recorder, change the "Remote control used" from "DVD Recorder" to "DVD Player". Store it. (This is IMPORTANT!) 2)OK, bottom line: you now need the One-for-All 6 (URC7560) Remote. Just the supplied Philips remote will NOT do on its own. (Unless you want to build your own of course... No? Me neither). Set its "DVD" button with the code 0539 (see your One-For All's instructions or visit the One-For-All site for details.) 3)Point your One-For-All at the recorder and press the "Magic" button ONCE. Still pointing your "One-For-All" at the recorder, press 085. The display on the recorder should now change to eleven dashes. 4) Using your PHILIPS remote, tap in 121 212 005 255 (the last few digits will NOT be visible on screen but they WILL be there). Now press "Play" on your PHILIPS remote. 5)Power down your recorder, wait a few seconds and Voila!!. You now have a region-free beastie!! As I said, this works for my set and it's firmware. I see there has been a lot of problem with different hacks with the code 121 212 005 001(or 2) well I thought 0 is the number for region free DVD`s at least it is for other brands. Havent tried it myself yet but for those who experiment with different numbers | |||

Hi all. Totally agree that the later firmware for the 880 needs an RC6 remote (such as the "One for All" 6). My 880 was firmware ff12h and the Play, 159 trick, whilst appear to work on the display, does not work properly. Its a good trick to get around RCE, but that is all. I upgraded the fware to ff12r but this still did not get around the issue. Don't forget after a successful region 1 test to use a region-dependent region 2 disk to make sure you truly are region free. A lot of disks (especially TV series etc) here in the UK are not region coded. Use a feature film or some-such. For simplicity (I couldn't get the palm pilot to work) use a One-for-All 6 and follow the other posts. 121 212 005 255 worked best for me as the code sequence. It also appears to be important to have the DVD set for a DVD player remote control. This is important because, as the manual states, the DVD recorder will not respond to an RC6 remote unless in player mode. You can set it back when done. Good luck ! | |||

Now make sure no disc is in the dvd recorder and that its on and waiting - cd drawer closed. Go to Omniremote on palm and press the Omniphilips955 button thats now appeared in the centre of your palm screen. Press it once only and you should get the 11 dashes on your tv screen. If you don`t, press the button again. Be aware that the palm`s Infra-red range is limited so don`t be too far away. If this works go to step 3...if not go to step 2b. 2b)OK, bottom line: you now need the One-for-All 6 (URC7560) Remote. Just the supplied Philips remote will NOT do on its own. Set its "DVD" button with the code 0539 (see your One-For All's instructions or visit the One-For-All site for details.) Point your One-For-All at the recorder and press the "Magic" button ONCE. Still pointing your "One-For-All" at the recorder, press 085. Hi I've just spoken to an engineer (who happens to be fixing my DVDR890 - apparently there's been a load of probs with the DVDR890 and Philips have extended the warranty - contact your supplier if you have a faulty one) - and he suggested the following for a region free hack... With disk tray open type 0000 0 (noughts NOT O's) then close tray (or might be 9999 0)he wasn't certain whether this would work, but it might be worth trying. Good luck | |||

This may save others some time. If you want to use the Oneforall hack listed above, you may find the DVDR890 does not respond to the setting of 0539. To fix this, use the Philps remote to select System Menu, then scroll down to "Remote". There are two options, with the default being "DVD Recorder". Select "DVD Player", then save and exit the menu system. The Oneforall will then work with code 0539, and the hack mentioned elsewhere will work. You can then change the Remote option back to "DVD Recorder" if you wish | |||

The unlocking instructions above DO work on 3.04, but you must follow them to the letter. For example, if you do not turn the recorder on from the front panel, it will not work. It will also fail if you have the tray open, as some instructions suggest. Again, the instructions are: 1. Turn on the player from the front panel with no disc insterted 2. Press HDD List on remote and ensure Hard Disk is highlighted 3. Press PLAY 4. Enter 159 121 212 005 255 5. Press PLAY 6. Turn the player off You'll know it's working correctly when you don't get a cross in the top right corner every time you press a number. | |||
