This unit (ns-330) does not have light when in standby mode. I've used the following procedure:

turned player off and on
AND SUCCESS!!!! My region 2 player now plays region 1 also!

The PC/Laptop with IrDA setup is not all that obvious.
- You'd better use an old laptop with Windows 95 as it has a
real DOS mode. W2K or XP will not work. You may need to
reinstall the IrDA stack : Go to Microsoft site and look for
WIN95IR.EXE download. That's the easiest way to apply the
hack.
- One alternative : Making a boot diskette with IrDA support,
but it is not a simple business, not at all. You may however try
and find some hints at www.bootdisk.com
- You may have to enter the BIOS setup to activate the IrDA
device. it's often disabled to spare the batteries.

It worked for me but I am familiar with computers and have
easily access to extra (old) resources.

- Started pronto with the prontocom.bat batch-file
- pasted the first buttondata and validated (not sure validation's necessary) sent it twice
- did the same for buttons 2 to 5 sending each twice.
- The player displays success
didn't work when I tried an R1, so I put the player in standby (disc still in) and did it all over again (sending each databutton twice.
- The player displayed succes again and began to play the DVD.

I build the IR-controller for less than 3EUR/USD / 2GBP including diode, wire and COMconnector. A whole lot cheaper than purchasing a palmtop.

I used a sony Clic palm and omi remote. went and purchased a zone 2, zone 3, and zone 1 dvd players now work on the above.

thx to all the ppl who posted here, it has really been good info and it worked! on my DVP-NS330, i used my pc to do the job, u will need the software in the link http://www.selen.org/sonydvd.html and the instruction offcourse + the hack code.

i used IRDA connected to my PC at com1, put the DVD in standby mode(offcourse it should be plugged put DO NOT PRESS THE ON BUTTON), got my IRDA in range with the DVD IR and send the sigle through the software (WINSAMP) and the SUCCESS msg was displayed on the DVD.

just wana say thx to all the ppl here and to tell then that this method workx fine!

Hi there, just made my sony DVP-NS333 code free, was code 2. Used my PALM IIIxe and the omniremote software and codes mentioned for the DVP-NS330 and others. Tried the business with putting the player in standby (no lights on) and then buttons 1 through 5 twice. DIDN't work. DID work pressing buttons 1 - 4 twice and then button 5 once. Got the success message and played a code 1 DVD.
Maybe this will work for other players where you guys havn't had success. Button 5 just seems to be the on/off!

follow these steps:

2. hold magic button until rabbit comes out
3. enter device code 0533

then
1. hold magic button until rabbit comes out

4. enter 3digit code from above
5. press button (1..5) program buttons 1..5 with the following codes:

2 - 255

Service Mode entry!
Hello!

I have discovered the service Menu on this player. You enter it by doing the following:

Press Power to start it up with no disc in the player.
Press Power to turn it off
Press Return
Press Clear
Now Press Power again and it will start up in Service Mode indicated for a short while with Service Mod in the players Display.You will be presented with a blue service menu.

I have dicovered that by selecting System Config hitting 0 and then in the next menu select Region pressing 5 that a menu showing the Players current Region is displayed. I have not yeat detected how to change it or if it is even possible to do so from the service menu. I will continue to experiment and I hope that someone here with more experience on Service menus maybe will find out if it is possible. But be carefull you do not want to mess anything up!.

First of all
Setup Device;
. Select dvd device on remote.
. Hold magic button until dvd button on remote flashes twice
. Enter device code 0533

Put a disc into the DVD player & put player onto welcome screen.
1. Hold magic button down untill dvd button on remote flashes twice
2. Press 994
3. Press magic
4. press 1,8,9 & then 1
Repeat steps 1 to 3
& then press 2,5,5 & then 2 etc using codes below


Program buttons 1..5 with the following codes:
1 - 189

1. Remove any disc from the DVD Player, put player on standby.

I used the One-For-All URC-7544.

SETUP THE ONE-FOR-ALL AS A SONY REMOTE;

I used oneforall 4 in one kameleon(urc-8040) remote to make my ns705 region free. just follow these steps:

prepare (this makes sure your remote is configured for your sony DVD player):
1. select dvd device on remote
2. hold magic button until rabbit comes out
3. enter device code 0533

Now we need to program buttons 1..5 (you may want to use the buttons with roman numbers at the bottom of the remote, and use another button for V, which doesn't exist) with the following codes, read below for instructions:
1 - 00189
2 - 00255
3 - 00095
4 - 00221
5 - 00079

This is how you program those numbers:
1. Hold magic button until rabbit comes out.
2. Press 994.
3. Press magic (don't hold).
4. Enter 5 digit code from above.
5. Press button (1..5) where to program it.
6. Repeat steps 1 to 5 for all keys.

That works, but more information on macros is included in the one4all manual for you particular model.

Have a go:
1. Remove disk, put player on standby.
2. Press 1,2,3,4,5 - SUCCESS is displayed and player starts up.
3. Press 1,2,3,4,5 - player shuts down and BINGO!

Should work for most of the dvp-ns### players.

Just a quick note to say that URC 7030 (universal remote) hack, for DVP-NS330, listed by Dave, works a treat!
It didn't work first time, not quite sure why, but I persevered and SUCCESS was displayed on player.
If it doesn't work after a few attempts, as listed by Dave, try the following.
(When typing in the no.s 1-5 try 1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5 instead of 1,2,3,4,5 repeated twice.)

As with many other Sony ns** dvd players you can put in a switch for selection region 1 and region 2.

In the NS330 there are 2 resistors, R164 and R169 (on the bottom side of the PCB with the large LSI's, next to the OKI memorychip ) responsible for this.
For Region 2 (PAL) R164 needs to be 12K and R169 needs to be 47K (default when one buys a region2 player). For Region 1 (NTSC) both R164 and R169 can simply be left out (NOT 0 ohm!!).
R166 isn't used for now. It's only for the selection of the model.

A few notes :
- Switching needs to be done when the player is turned off or in standby mode.
- After selecting a region, the menu will return to it's default settings. All user settings are somehow lost.
- When selecting region 1, the player will disable the RGB output on the SCART plug. It is however not possible to turn this on since on US/Japanese players this plugs seems to be missing and the menu will hide this option. Your TV must then be able to handle NTSC-composite-video or NTSC S-Video because the DVd player will only output Video or SVideo from this point.
THIS IS MAYBE THE SAME THING A SOME PEOPLE EXPERIENCE AFTER THEY DONE THE REMOTE CONTROL HACK (with their PC or Palm).
The good thing of the hardware hack is that if one selects region 2 again, the SCART-output will be enabled again.
- Applying this hack takes good soldering skills because the resistors are SMD-types and fairly small.
- Macrovision can't be disabled in this way.
- As far as I have checked it is not possible to select Region1 in combination with PAL output.
- Only replacing R169 (Region selection) doens't do the trick. Also R164 needs to be changed.

I tried all that WINSAMP crap which i have to say is way too awkward with WindowsXP even tho i managed to relocate my IRda to COM2, install DOS n all the other s#1t. And it stil didn't work!! When it came down to it the bog-standard sony dvd remote did the job!!!!!

After about a week of trying various methods of hacking my Sony DVP-NS330, I finally got it!!!

Laptop IrDA??? Nope.....
selen.org's WINSAMP??? Nope.....
Palm Pilot??? Nope......
Some programable remote that i nearly paid 40 quid for??? Nope!!!

The answer??? My bloody mobile phone!!! Yep, and I'm completely serious.

I have a Nokia 7650, which runs on the Symbian OS. Its a Series60 phone, or so I'm told. And a little company out there called PSILOC have developped a universal remote application for said Series60 phones. This can be downloaded here:

If you are unsure how to install the software check out your phones manual or whatever.

The best thing about it is its programable, and it accepts files in Philips Pronto CCF and Linux Lirc formats. Once youve got it installed, set up a user defined device (should be the first item when you go to select a device, and select a layout for the buttons (doesnt matter which, a tv layout is handiest though).

Click on the first button, this should bring you into a blank user device list. Create a new one and call it whatever you like. Now select this and youll get a blank user commands list. Add a new command and using a "command name" and "discreet code". The followin is the list of commands in the format

Copy the above to a file and send it to your phone, copy and pasting the commands and codes to the appropriate user command. Then simply asign number1 on the layout to the command "Button name-1" etc......

The last and final part of this odyssey is simply pressing the buttons in the order 1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5 in close proximity to the dvd player.

Phew!!!! All done and dusted!!!!!

P.S. this also worked on my friends DVP-NS305, except he doesnt have a 60herz compatible tv so his picture was black and white. Cant win them all!!!!

I used oneforall 6 in one (urc-7562) remote to make my ns330 region free. just follow these steps:

prepare (this makes sure your remote is configured for your sony DVD player):
1. select dvd device on remote
2. hold magic button until DVD flashes twice.
3. enter device code 0533

Now we need to program buttons 1..5 with the following codes, read below for instructions:
1 - 189
2 - 255
3 - 095
4 - 221
5 - 079

This is how you program those numbers:
1. Hold magic button until DVD flashes twice.
2. Press 994.
3. Press magic (don't hold).
4. Enter 3 digit code from above.
5. Press button (1..5) where to program it.
6. Repeat steps 1 to 5 for all keys.

That works, but more information on macros is included in the oneforall manual for your particular model.

Have a go:
1. Remove disk, put player on standby.
2. Press 1,2,3,4,5 - SUCCESS is displayed and player starts up.
3. Press 1,2,3,4,5 - player shuts down and BINGO!

Should work for most of the dvp-ns### players.

OK, first of all thanks to everyone on this forum.

I've managed to reprogram my RDR-GX3 using Psiloc total IR remote on my Sony Ericsson P900 - Free trial download! This program is also available for Nokia Series 60 phones!
As this is the same hack as the DVD players (region 2 at least) I thought I'd post it here too.

I then got a Philips Pronto setup file from Remotecentral.com:

Total IR recognises this file - beam it to the phone - open the file, then select to import the codes.

Now open Total IR and select any device (I used a Sony TV setting as it has numbers on it).

Assign the buttons thus:
Tap the menu button in the bottom left corner, then tap Select Command - dismiss the dialog then tap the 1 button on the remote. Press select on the next dialog...

Here I ran into a snag - but I worked it out from the fact that I learned on another forum that button 5 should be the power button - but button 1 was power for me. So the codes were backwards!

Assign Unnamed 5 by tapping Done.
Repeat for buttons 2-5 by assigning 4, 3, 2, 1 respectively.

Who knows, maybe for you the codes import the right way around - so if this doesn't work, try assigning code 1 to button 1.

When the ir Remote is set up, just do like all the other sony DVD hacks say...

With the DVD recorder in standby, press buttons 1-5 in sequence... Recorder beeps and powers on - repeat sequence - recorder beeps and powers down - Ta-daaa... Multiregion enabled.

Final important comment: THIS ONLY WORKED WITH THE DVD PLAYER SET TO REMOTE SETTING 1 - if it's set to 2 or 3, change it in the Options menu first, then change it back if you need to.

I have a One For All URC - 7562 and followed the instructions posted by Dave Scott, April 10 2004. It works.

If you can't get it to work, you're not programming the macros correctly - the instruction manual for the URC - 7562 describes a different macro setup but use the one posted by Dave Scott.

How to hack a Sony Dvpns330 with a One For All 8204 Remote.
This hack will set your Sony to multiregion.

1-Press and hold the Magic key (Hat)until the rabbit appears.
2-Now press the key Magic button (bottom half of the remote and to the left).
3-Press the DVD logo near the top of the remote.
4-Press the Magic Button once only (the hat).
5-Enter the number 00189 then press number one.

The remote flashes twice and returns you to the screen where you press 'Keymagic' again.

Now repeat steps 3 to 4 using the following numbers.

000953
002214
000795
When all thats done and you have returned to the screen where you press 'Keymagic' press ESC.
You will have returned to the normal remote screen.
Now here's the good bit!
Set your DVD into standby-which means no visable words on the players readout.
Get the remote control you have just programed,point it at the DVD player and press in a steady fashion the buttons
1-2-3-4-5
Your player will say success!
Now press those buttons again and the player will go back into standby.
O.K? Cool!
Now switch back on stick region 1 or whatever dvd in it and off you go!
Sweet yes?!

I've used the remote hack.

All worked fine for DVP-NS50, but some regions still doesn't play. Everything is black, white, and running, adn when I hit eject, the picture looks fine, colour is back, but then the disc ejects.

What does these IR codes mean?
And how many buttons does the NS330 have.

I think this works but shifts the play for all regions to eject...! Meaning when you click eject the code executes, which is not what we want here.

Let me know, anyone who knows why the ir code (189, etc), or what is presents.

It worked very vell for me on Sony DVP-NS300.

Below are detailed steps for Symbian S60.

1) I used a Nokia S60 phone on which I had instaled the latest version of PSILOC's IrRemote software.

2) on PSILOC's web site, I created a remote command profile having only 5 buttons (play, pause, stop, rewind, and forward) each associated to the numeric sequence given for button_1 to button_5. At the end of the wizard procedure, I associated it to the Sony NS300.

Then I downloaded the file to my computer (let us call it dezoner_NS300.ir) and then copied it to a directory on my phone.

3) on my phone, when I clicked on the file dezoner_NS300.ir, it is automatically opened by IrRemote .

4) then I moved the phone in front of the DVD player's display, which is Standy-By mode, and applied the sequence : 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
At the end you read OFF and it disappears.

Note : you cannot dezone using the original remote command.
