PostRegion code hack posted by John Smith, May 30 2005:

I just bought the CH-DVR 1600 @ Target. This is just a temporary workaround to enable playing of region 2 DVD disks (don't have other regions but believe it will work also), until the real regional unlock is available.

1. Insert the region 2 DVD disk and close the tray.
2. Wait for the "Wrong Region" popup to appear in the upper-right corner of your TV screen.
3. The display on your DRV reads "STOP" at this point and the "Wrong Region" popup has disappeared.
4. Press the number "1" button on your DVR remote and a small input popup will appear in the upper-left corner of your screen.
5. Do not press anything else and the DVR will accept this entry as a chapter # and proceed to this chapter to start playing the movie.

NOTE1: The DVR runs in a somewhat restricted node, e.g. the DVR display still reads "STOP" and some remote functions do not work, such as "Menu". The input numbers correspond to the chapters on the DVD disk, so you can experiment and get to the menu once you hit one of the extra feature chapters with a "back to the menu" link on it.

NOTE2: I’m anxiously awaiting the real unlock sequence, as I tried most of the old ones posted here, none seemed to work.

PostOther hack posted by Mike Smith, June 05 2005:

First of all, I will confirm the previous "Wrong Region" workaround. Works perfectly.

Also... Although this unit, box and owner's manual say it is NTSC only, it is not. It DOES play PAL disks. Just put it in and it plays. (I also have the inexpensive Cyberhome DVD Player which says on the box that it is NTSC/PAL.) I was worried when I bought it that it might not play PAL. Nice to be found wrong.

Haven't recorded with it yet, but will try it shortly. It is a GREAT buy at Best Buy for $99!

I have the small cheap 300 series cyberhome dvd player hacked for my british DVD's (because I'm from england) and now have the cyberhome DVR 1600 recorder from atrget, works great so far and the temporary hack works also linking the player to it you can copy DVD films as well (to back up of course) without any fancy messing about with pause and stuff.

New Cyberhome 1600 firmware is posted here:
http://www.cyberhome.com/downloads.asp?Product=1600

On the European Cyberhome support web there is a hack (?) that contains a keystroke combination 1-1-8-8. However the instructions are in German and I don't really know what they do, but the text mentions getting the player into "Virgin mode".
Take a look at this:

The german site states the following according to google language tools:

ATTENTION important customer information! In order to ensure a perfect function, the first installations mode (Virgin mode) must be accomplished. Detailed information takes you please from the operating instructions. 1. Before execution of the Virgin you guarantee mode that their recorder is connected with the Tv equipment and the antenna. 2. Select their language. Since the installation in this language is continued. 3. Select please the country in that the recorder are installed out. Thus the necessary TV standards is adjusted. (the wrong country should be selected here, preset is UK, comes it e.g. into Germany to an incorrect browsing, it to become not all programs found.) 4. Implement the browsing. 5. Accomplish now all further steps up to end. 6. Only if the first installations mode were completely accomplished, the disk drawer can be opened. If you liked to again accomplish the first installations mode, you can re-activate these as follows: 1. Switch the equipment 2 on. Setup press 3. 1-1-8-8 enters, the equipment goes in the first installations mode

DO NOT UPDATE THE FIRMWARE for this recorder, or the hack will not work. I have the ZU model, and pressing 1 worked fine. updating the firmware immediately disabled this hack. I wish I could remove the firmware update I installed!

PostRegion code hack posted by BB, July 02 2005:

I don't have the hack to set the DVR 1600 region free but I think I might be getting close.
Under the general menu, you can select versions. The only thing you seem to be able to do here is enter three digit codes which thus far my machine has rejected. On another DVD player this was the area where the region codes could be changed.
I tried some random codes and then started to go systematicaly starting at 100 and got up to 130.
I'll keep trying. Maybe some of you want to try codes from 999 down or start at 300, 500, or so.

PostRegion code hack posted by Bas, July 05 2005:

This is the hack:

To Change Region
-Switch player ON with no disc in the tray. Close tray and press MENU, 1, and 9 on the remote control. A menu should appear with the Region Option. Highlight the Region entry and press ENTER on the remote. Type in the Region you want. (Put 0 for code free) Press ENTER again to confirm choice. Press OPEN/CLOSE TRAY button and put in movie.

PostOther hack posted by Stef, July 05 2005:

Does this also work with the latest microcode upgrades?

Does it work on both MU and ZU versions?

PostRegion code hack posted by EGO, July 10 2005:

I've tested thi hack with a iLO DVDR05 model ZU but it should work with CyberHome DVR 1600 (similar to hack by John Smith)
To hack region just insert the DVD and it will show "Wrong Region".
When in stop mode you can type the "Title" number and it will play that title.
When in play mode you can type the "Chapter" number and it will jump to that chapter.
You can see the titles and chapter available by pressing DISPLAY at the remote.
DVD MENU key at remote does not work and shows "Wrong region" however you can try another trick.
DVD menu is normally title 0 but it will refuse to jump to title 0. If you jump to any other title (3 for example) at the end it will return automaticaly to title 0 that is the DVD menu.
This is useful to change audio and subtitle languages that sometimes also do not work using the remote.
I've tested several region 4 DVDs. Some of them just play normally. Some other require the steps above to get to main menu.
The only thing I miss is that the TV receiver only works in NTSC. PAL signal comes in black and white. Dish channels work fine if you change the output to NTSC.

3. With the remote control press the following sequence of
numbers: 1, 6, 9, 5, 1, 8.

5. Choose your required region from 0-9
6. Region 0 sets the player to multiregional.
7. Exit the menu and power off and then power on. The player
will now be set to the region of your choice.

If the above hack does not work then please use the one below. It is dependant on whatever version of the Firmware is on the player. The latest version will work with the following:
1. Press Setup
2. Press Rec
3. Press <8>-<1>-<0>-<5>
4. Press Rec
5. Select the region code with the number keys or the navigation keys. 0 for Multiregion.
6. Press Setup to return from the setup menu

andy is WRONG!!!! I, Michael Rainey, today, bought a Cyberhome CH-DVR 1600 DVD recorder today at Target, here in California, USA, on August 4th 2005. It was set to region 1 and was hoping to change it. First, I tried that "temporary workaround" hack. Didn't Work. Then I tired another one that mentioned to press "Title". Didn't work either. Then one told me to go to set up, and then punch in 8105. A secret menu did pop up! SUCCESS!!.... not quite... It was the system menu and it did say Region Code: 1 at the bottom but form there you couldn't change it. Damn. But then it told me to go to setup again, and this time it told me to punch in 169518. The same system menu then came up! With the region code bar highlighted in gree!! SUCCESS!!!!!! I then punched in nuber 0 and the open/close. The menu disappeared and then the region stuck!!! I can prove it on region 2 and region 1 discs!!!! Yes!!!! It did work!!! And the hack worked here in the USA starting with region 1!!!

I can confirm that what has been posted before me - purchased CH-DVR 1600MU at Best Buy last week (Aug 9th).

Went into the setup menu and then entered "169518" and a hidden window popped up. The field for Region was highlighted. I entered "0" and it took the change.

That was easy...

PostOther hack posted by Mark, August 24 2005:

The player that you copy from (source)has to be macrovision disabled. Macrovision protection remains on an RF signal. Some of the earlier players like the Cyberhome ADN12 had macrovsion disabled from the factory. Others like the cyberhome ADL528 had a temporary macrovsion hack which allows copying to the DVR1600 or VCR. To my knowledge I do not know of a macrovision hack.

The hack posted by DJ worked very well to the MU model and after the firmware update! I bought the DVD-R in Miami (Best Buy)2 weeks ago, I live in Brazil and this trick sets up the DVD-R to all Regions ! Also I have the SKY (Satelite TV)here and I didn't have any problem with Macrovision.

To change setting from region 2 to the region of your choice:
1. Power on the player
2. With the remote control press set up.
3. With the remote control press the following sequence of
numbers: 1, 6, 9, 5, 1, 8.

The hack posted by HOOK_RJ on August 24 2005 regarding Region code and Macrovision worked fine to make the unit Region free but did not turn off the Macrovision video copy protection system. The Macrovision video copy protection system continues to block me from copying a purchased DVD movie. The message copy protection error appears on the screen.

PostRegion code posted by Darrell, November 22 2005:

If you want to archive your VHS tapes that you bought and are macrovision protected. Hook up some sort of unprotected signal to your VCR(like cable tv or a broadcast channel) while the tape is in the VCR. Push record on the Cyberhome recorder, and because the signal isn't copy protected, it will record now.

PostRegion code posted by fred penner, November 24 2005:

The CyberHome DVR1600 always looks for the Macrovision signal. I started recording on the DVR while a broadcast signal was present on the VCR and the DVR started to record but when I pressed play on the VCR to start the movie, the DVR stopped recording and the message "Copy protection error" came up on the screen.

PostRegion code posted by Darrell, November 25 2005:

It does work, I know this for sure. Maybe it is the version I have c00065mcu. I have cable hooked up to the VCR and the tape in. I leave it on some channel and click record. I, also forgot to mention I set the timer for recording to approximately the length of time of the video. I now hit play on the VCR and viola. It works. I later go and edit the video. This worked on both DVD+R and DVD+RW. I use the +RW's and edit the beggining to remove the unwanted television.

PostRegion code posted by fred penner, November 25 2005:

I tried the work around posted by Darrell with no success. I also, have cable hooked up to the VCR and a tape (The VHS movie to be copied) in the VCR. With the VCR receiving a channel on cable I program the DVR with a scheduled recording to begins in a few minutes from the DVR’s input that is connected to the VCR. Once the scheduled recording begins, I press play on the VCR to begin playing the movie. The DVR then pauses and stops recording, the message “Copy Protection Error” is displayed on the screen. I tried to vary the length of time (from 1 second to about 30 seconds) from when the DVR begins recording to when I pressed Play on the VCR. My Cyber Home DVR 1600 is also version C00065MCU with the added information of Serve: DX041D D 105N, Adsp: V08.00.01.46 R0.2, Control: C00000540. I wonder what other variable might be causing this discrepancy.

As for region hacks, tried the one posted above for the MU version on the DVR1600 I bought today in Asda with a manufacture date of December 2005 (So the very latest player and firmware) The 1-6-9-5-1-8 hack works fine.

Next I used The hack listed by Tony on Dec 26. The unit is now region free and this seems to have removed the copyright protection dialog and Macrovision distortion as well. I want to copy all my kids VHS tapes to save space :).

Note: I do still get some jitter from VHS recording and am not sure if this Macrovision residue or limitations with the H/W.

I've found a way to disable the Macrovision. While not technically a hack, I am now making a copy of a Macrovision encoded dvd. First, run rca cables from the output of the dvd player/vcr you're using as a source into a RF Modulator. Then run a coax cable out of the modulator into "antenna in" on your dvr-1600. Make sure the dvd player/vcr you're using as a source is playing. Next, on the dvr-1600 go to setup and run a channel scan on cable. Your dvr-1600 should find the picture. Now you can record because the dvr-1600 thinks it is recording from cable instead of a macrovision encoded dvd or video cassette. Good luck!

Just wanted to help with those that would like to back-up DVD's or VHS that
are encoded with macrovision. very simple, just run outside source player
(source you would like to back-up) through a DV bridge (such as the Dazzle
Hollywood DV Bridge) or an RF Modulator straight into the DVR 1600 (I did
this on the MU). The key is to use two different connection types (such as RCA
out of the source DVD player and into the bridge and then come out of the
bridge using fire wire, or compatible DV connection, into the DVR 1600). If
you try to run RCA into the bridge and then also into the 1600 you will
receive an error message. Simply running DV out of the bridge and into the
1600 will allow you to back-up without any problems. Hope this helps
anyone in need.

(Using RF Modulator should work the same if the modulator can run multiple
connections that include a DV out. Coaxiel cable out to the 1600 should work
but you will have to run a channel setup to find the signal. Easier just to get a
bridge that has DV outs)

Re the Region code hack posted by Ron, January 02 2006 and others. I have the CH-DVR 1600 MU Manufactured June 2005. Before ever attempting to hack the region, was forced to upgrade FW to DVR1600_MU_ZU_Loader_105N.nrg front end and DVR1600MU_610.nrg back end due to repeated "no disc" issues with recorder. After loading the FW, tried various combinations of the hacks posted here. The setup record 8105 worked to display region, but could not change. The 169518 as posted by many did not work exactly as posted, this mod of that worked perfectly:

1. Power up unit with No Disc in tray
2. IMPORTANT - OPEN THE TRAY (most others don't say this but this hack DID NOT WORK on mine with the tray closed)
3. Press Setup button on remote control
4. Press 1 button on remote
5. Press 6 button on remote
6. Press 9 button on remote
7. Press 5 button on remote
8. Press 1 button on remote
9. Press 8 button remote
10. Select region code with the Number Buttons or the
Navigation buttons on remote.0 (Zero)=Multiregion
11.Exit menu
12.Press Power Off button
13.Press Power on

You can enter the menu this way whenever you want or just leave it 0. Unsure if the player is RCE proof...

We live in the UK and wanted to play our American DVDs on the CyberHome DVR-1600. We tried several different hacks listed and this is the only one that worked for us--the first one listed by DJ on July 12, 2005. Just so others in the UK will know which one to use -- bought the DVR at Asda for 69 pounds.

I have a DVR 1600 ZU and I haven't been able to get any of these "hacks" to work with my player. But, I have found a way to play a Region 2 DVD on my unit and, have it start from the menu screen instead of the beginning of chapter 1.

1. Power up player
2. Insert DVD
3. Screen will say "wrong disc" and player will say "stop"
4. Press "2" key on remote

Disc will start up like any other DVD, with copyright warnings, previews, etc. stopping on the menu screen, where you have full access to features and commands.
